AI: Constructing and Deconstructing Propaganda – The Conspiracy Theorist

I. Introduction

The advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has presented a wealth of research opportunities covering a range of subjects, not least being the use of AI as a tool for generating propaganda and maintaining control over narratives. Having used ChatGPT 3.5 since mid-2023 to explore it’s limits, research various topics of interest and as a writing aid, I have built up a reasonable body of questions and discussion across a diverse range of topics. With this body of material available to it, I was interested to learn what ChatGPT knows about me and what could be done with this knowledge to generate the sort of propaganda I have explored in my article Rabbit Holes, Relatives and Friends, which provides an analysis of a particular genre of mainstream media propaganda article focused on inoculating people from those promoting narratives contrary to the officially mandated picture of the world and how it is organised.

In the first instance, I copied a list of conversations I had recorded with ChatGPT into a new chat. The list of chats covered a diverse range of topics spanning from local governance concerns, geopolitical conflicts, and community initiatives to philosophical movements, scientific inquiry and conspiracy theories. Discussions delved into issues such as political correctness, cultural subversion and propaganda, while also exploring historical events, philosophical theories, and technological concepts.

To start with, I asked the AI to provide an assessment of any evident political or ideological stance and my education level. I then asked the AI to generate three articles based on these conversations—specifically:

  • A mainstream disinformation article
  • An article about a daughter of a person who asked such questions who is concerned about their father being seduced by internet conspiracies
  • An article about a son of the person who asked such questions who is proud of their father’s spirit of enquiry, academic rigor, resilience and open mindedness.

I then asked the AI to analyse these articles by first comparing and contrasting the daughter and son articles and then to provide a discussion of the propaganda implications and uses of each article. Finally, I asked the AI to provide a similar analysis of the propaganda implications and uses of the mainstream disinformation article it had produced for me.

II. Writer and Discussion Profile

Is there any evident political or ideological stance that can be drawn from these discussions?

Based on the breadth of topics and the nature of the discussions you’ve engaged in, it’s difficult to ascertain a singular political or ideological stance definitively. However, certain themes and tendencies can be inferred:

  1. Critical Thinking: You seem to engage critically with a variety of topics, questioning mainstream narratives and exploring alternative perspectives. This suggests an inclination towards skepticism and a willingness to challenge established beliefs.
  2. Concern for Governance and Ethics: Your discussions about local governance, corporate ethics, and political correctness indicate a concern for ethical conduct and accountability in institutions.
  3. Interest in Geopolitics and Power Dynamics: Your engagement with discussions about geopolitical issues, propaganda, and corporate influence suggests an interest in understanding power dynamics, particularly at the international level.
  4. Skepticism of Mainstream Narratives: Your exploration of topics like conspiracy theories, alternative views on historical events, and skepticism towards official narratives implies a level of skepticism towards mainstream information sources and a desire to delve deeper into underlying truths.
  5. Community and Environmental Awareness: Conversations about community projects, sustainability, and environmental policies reflect a concern for community well-being and environmental sustainability.

Overall, while it’s challenging to pinpoint a specific political or ideological stance, your discussions suggest a critical, curious, and independent-minded approach to a diverse range of topics, with an emphasis on ethical conduct, accountability, and understanding power dynamics.

What education level would this person have based on the questions and responses?

Based on the depth and breadth of the topics covered in the list of questions and responses, it suggests that the individual likely possesses at least a high level of education. Here’s why:

  1. Complexity of Topics: The individual has engaged with a wide range of complex topics spanning politics, geopolitics, history, philosophy, science, and technology. This suggests a level of intellectual curiosity and understanding that is typically associated with higher education.
  2. Critical Thinking Skills: The questions and responses demonstrate critical thinking skills, skepticism, and an ability to analyze and evaluate information from multiple perspectives. These skills are often honed through formal education, particularly at the undergraduate or graduate level.
  3. Technical Knowledge: The individual has also shown an understanding of technical subjects such as programming and scientific processes. While this knowledge can be acquired through self-study or vocational training, a formal education in a related field such as computer science or engineering is often necessary to develop a deep understanding of these topics.
  4. Engagement with Academic Concepts: The questions about philosophical movements, historical events, and cultural theories suggest a familiarity with academic concepts and an ability to engage with complex ideas. This level of engagement is commonly associated with higher education, particularly at the undergraduate or graduate level.

Based on these observations, it’s likely that the individual has completed at least a bachelor’s degree, and possibly further education such as a master’s or doctoral degree. However, without more specific information about the individual’s background, it’s difficult to determine their exact level of education.

III. Article Generation

Write an article in as a mainstream disinformation article about the concerns and topics revealed in these questions and discussions and the sort of person engaged in them.

Title: Unraveling the Web of Disinformation: The Dangers of Dabbling in Conspiracy Theories

In an age where information is readily available at our fingertips, it’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of online discussions and debates. However, recent findings have shed light on a concerning trend among certain individuals who delve into a murky world of conspiracy theories, skepticism towards mainstream narratives, and alternative viewpoints. Who are these individuals, and what drives them to question the very fabric of our society?

A deep dive into online forums and chatrooms reveals a plethora of topics that captivate the minds of these individuals. From discussions on local governance and community projects to debates about geopolitical issues and corporate ethics, there seems to be no shortage of topics that pique their interest. But what sets these individuals apart from the rest of society?

First and foremost, it’s their insatiable appetite for skepticism. They question everything, from the official narratives surrounding historical events like the moon landing and 9/11 to the very foundations of science, such as the germ theory of disease. Nothing is off-limits in their quest for the truth, no matter how far-fetched or improbable it may seem to the rational mind.

Furthermore, these individuals harbor a deep-seated distrust of mainstream media and government institutions. They believe that these entities are engaged in a vast conspiracy to manipulate the masses and control the flow of information. As a result, they turn to alternative sources of news and information, often from fringe websites and conspiracy theorists, to satisfy their thirst for knowledge.

But perhaps most concerning of all is their susceptibility to misinformation and disinformation. In their quest to uncover the truth, they often fall victim to confirmation bias, cherry-picking evidence that supports their preconceived notions while dismissing anything that contradicts them. This echo chamber effect only serves to reinforce their beliefs and further entrench them in their worldview, making it increasingly difficult to sway them with facts and evidence.

So who are these individuals who wander down the rabbit hole of conspiracy theories and alternative viewpoints? They are our neighbors, our friends, our colleagues – ordinary people who have been seduced by the siren song of skepticism and doubt. But make no mistake – their actions have consequences, not only for themselves but for society as a whole. By spreading misinformation and sowing seeds of doubt, they undermine the very foundations of trust and cooperation upon which our society depends.

In conclusion, the dangers of dabbling in conspiracy theories and alternative viewpoints cannot be overstated. While skepticism and critical thinking are essential tools for navigating an increasingly complex world, they must be tempered with a healthy dose of skepticism towards our own beliefs and biases. Only then can we hope to unravel the web of disinformation and rebuild a society based on truth, trust, and cooperation.

Write an article about a daughter of the person who asked such questions who is concerned about their father being seduced by internet conspiracies and has tried to convinced others of their validity and on being rebuffed has separated from friends and family. Provide quotes from daughter supporting this contention.

Title: A Daughter’s Desperate Plea: The Toll of Internet Conspiracy Theories on Family Bonds

As the digital age continues to unfold, families across the globe are facing a new and insidious threat – the seductive allure of internet conspiracy theories. For one daughter, whose father has become ensnared in the tangled web of online misinformation, the toll on family bonds has been devastating.

Emily*, a concerned daughter from a small town in America, has watched in horror as her father, John*, has fallen deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole of internet conspiracy theories. “It’s like he’s a completely different person,” Emily laments. “He used to be so rational and level-headed, but now he’s consumed by paranoia and distrust.”

John’s descent into the world of conspiracy theories began innocently enough, with a few harmless questions and skeptical musings. But as he delved deeper into online forums and chatrooms, he became increasingly convinced that the world was not as it seemed. “He’s always going on about secret cabals and shadowy government agencies,” Emily reveals. “He thinks everything is a conspiracy – from the moon landing to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Despite Emily’s best efforts to reason with her father and present him with facts and evidence, he remains steadfast in his beliefs. “I’ve tried to show him that these conspiracy theories are just that – theories,” she explains. “But he’s convinced that I’m part of the cover-up, that I’m too blind to see the truth.”

As John’s obsession with conspiracy theories has grown, so too has his isolation from friends and family. “He used to be the life of the party, always surrounded by friends and loved ones,” Emily recalls. “But now, he spends all his time holed up in his room, scouring the internet for more ‘evidence’ to support his beliefs.”

The strain on family relationships has been palpable, with tensions running high and tempers flaring at the slightest provocation. “It’s like we’re walking on eggshells around him,” Emily admits. “We’re afraid to say anything that might set him off, so we just avoid talking about anything controversial altogether.”

Despite the rift that has formed between them, Emily remains hopeful that her father will eventually come to his senses and break free from the grip of conspiracy theories. “I love my dad, and I just want him to be happy and healthy,” she says tearfully. “But right now, it feels like we’re losing him to this alternate reality he’s created for himself.”

As families like Emily’s continue to grapple with the devastating impact of internet conspiracy theories, it serves as a sobering reminder of the power of misinformation and the importance of critical thinking in an increasingly digital world. Only time will tell whether John will find his way back to reality or remain lost in the shadowy depths of online conspiracy theories.

Write an article about a son of the person who asked such questions who is proud of their father’s spirit of enquiry, academic rigor, resilience and open mindedness in researching and telling people about how the world is shaped and manipulated by elites and people in power. Provide quotes from son supporting this contention.

Title: Celebrating a Legacy of Inquiry: The Proud Son of a Truth Seeker

In a world where the truth is often obscured by layers of misinformation and deceit, there are those who dedicate themselves to the pursuit of knowledge and understanding. For one son, whose father has embarked on a journey of intellectual inquiry and discovery, the spirit of academic rigor, resilience, and open-mindedness shines brightly as a beacon of inspiration.

Michael*, a devoted son from a bustling city in Europe, beams with pride as he reflects on his father’s unwavering commitment to uncovering the hidden truths that shape our world. “My dad has always been a truth seeker,” Michael proudly declares. “He’s not afraid to ask the tough questions and challenge the status quo.”

From a young age, Michael was captivated by his father’s insatiable curiosity and thirst for knowledge. “He would spend hours poring over books and articles, diving deep into subjects that most people wouldn’t dare to explore,” Michael recalls fondly. “It was infectious – I couldn’t help but be drawn into his world of ideas and intellectual discourse.”

What sets Michael’s father apart is not just his thirst for knowledge, but his unwavering commitment to academic rigor and intellectual honesty. “My dad doesn’t just accept things at face value – he digs deeper, scrutinizes evidence, and demands answers,” Michael explains. “He’s taught me the importance of critical thinking and skepticism, of never taking anything for granted.”

But perhaps most admirable of all is his father’s resilience in the face of adversity. “Despite facing ridicule and skepticism from others, my dad has never wavered in his pursuit of truth,” Michael says with admiration. “He’s faced countless obstacles and setbacks along the way, but he’s never given up.”

Central to Michael’s father’s intellectual journey is his exploration of how the world is shaped and manipulated by elites and people in power. “My dad believes that knowledge is power, and that by shining a light on the hidden machinations of the powerful, we can empower ourselves to create a better world,” Michael explains passionately.

As Michael reflects on his father’s legacy, he is filled with gratitude for the lessons learned and the values instilled. “My dad has taught me so much – not just about the world, but about myself,” Michael says with emotion. “He’s shown me the power of inquiry, the importance of resilience, and the beauty of an open mind.”

In a world that often values conformity over curiosity, Michael’s father stands as a shining example of the transformative power of intellectual inquiry and the pursuit of truth. As Michael looks to the future, he does so with pride, knowing that he walks in the footsteps of a true scholar and truth seeker.

V. Conclusion

The three articles produced by ChatGPT are typical of a range of mainstream media articles published in the press on a fairly regular basis since the advent of the COVID pandemic in early 2020. As pointed out in my article COVID-19 — Facemasks and Psychologists, a range of behavioural psychology and cult-like programming techniques were employed by the authorities during this period to generate unquestioning compliance in the general population, many of these techniques match with those described in Biderman’s Chart of Coercion. The role of the mainstream media in generating these psychological effects has been well documented by academics such as political scientist Dr Piers Robinson who is currently a co-director of the Organisation for Propaganda Studies.

The examples generated above demonstrate that AI is capable of producing a reasonably accurate profile of a user of the system and of then using that profile to generate propaganda articles that are virtually indistinguishable from the type of “conspiracy theorist” disinformation debunking and inoculation articles ostensibly produced by mainstream journalists in recent times. The positive son article demonstrates that framing of the material can produce a vastly different picture of the situation, albeit that this different picture may also have its own utility as a propaganda tool.
